Vocational Training
Topportunities are available for students to obtain training in a variety of fields such as: home-health care; nursing assistants; heating and air-conditioning; machine shop; plumbing; electricity; welding and carpentry.
Work Study
This course is intended for students who seek to combine work related experience with their academic course of study. It may involve internships or work at appropriate businesses and agencies. A faculty member at the school will evaluate the student at his/her place of employment and monitor the student’s progress with the employment supervisor.
SAT Review
This course is to help prepare students for the mathematics and verbal sections of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). A review of necessary skills and test taking techniques is provided.
Introduction to Psychology
Psychology involves the study of mental processes including: how humans observe, describe, explain and predict behaviors. Human development and its effect on learning, thinking, personality, and social relationships is also examined.
Introduction to Sociology
This course concentrates on a study of man in his society. It will include such areas as culture, personality, the family, the community, social organization, and an emphasis on the study of civil rights for minorities and women. Students should gain a better understanding of society and their role in it.
Stock Market
Starting with a virtual cash account of $100,000, students strive to create the best-performing portfolio using a live trading simulation. They work together in teams, practicing leadership, organization, negotiation, and cooperation as they compete for the top spot.
Crime Scene Investigation
Using a fictitious crime scene, students will explore how a crime is investigated using science, math and real-world knowledge. The class will recreate a crime scene; view soil, hair, and blood samples; and use the evidence provided to make conclusions and possibly solve the crime.
Competitive Physical Education
This course requires students to have a comprehensive understanding of, and to participate in, seasonal team sports including softball, volleyball, basketball and track..
Introduction to Golf
A beginner’s course focusing on fundamentals such as: grip, stance, swing, short game, course management and rules of etiquette.
Sports History
In this course, students will explore how sports have been affected and changed by history as well as how history has changed sports.
Senior Project
The Senior Class will collaborate upon and design a class project implementing knowledge gathered from school and life experiences. Students will gain first hand experience with the concepts of ‘job safety’ and ‘team work’.
Independent Study
This course is available to students who are required to make up credits previously omitted in their course of studies.
Office Etiquette
Students will develop proper front office techniques incorporating: answering phones, taking messages, and obtaining the correct information from the caller. Students will also learn Filing Systems, Tickler Files, Alphabetizing, and general front office duties.
Scrapbooking
Students will learn various techniques for cropping photos, lettering, and creating unique page layouts. Students will be required to provide personal photos to complete their scrapbooks.
Aeronautics
This course, also known as “ground school,” prepares the student for the FAA written test for a private pilot’s license. The course will also include computer interactive training videos, aviation history, and some classic and popular films about aviation.
Classic Films
This is an introduction to the historical development of film as an art form. Students will view, discuss, and research contemporary and classic American and European films in a variety of genres. Film structure, editing and cinematography are emphasized. Film as a social statement and as a reflection of cultural values is noted.
Woodshop
This is a semester-long exploratory course. The student develops knowledge and use of hand tools and begins the use of power tools in woodworking. Individual choice in projects can be made and more complicated woodworking and wood finishing is taught. This course is open to males and females and requires no previous experience.
Weight Training
This is an introductory course that focuses on correct weight lifting techniques. Individual work will range from muscle hypertrophy to muscle strength and endurance, as well as, promoting proper physical conditioning.
Computer Technology
This one-semester course introduces students to practical, advanced operations of the computer. Through a series of curriculum-based projects, students will become familiar with database management, spreadsheet design, keyboarding skills, and developing skills in preparing essays and personal documentation.
